What is a High Shutter Count for a Used Camera?
When shopping for a used DSLR or mirrorless camera, the shutter count is the "odometer" of the device. But what exactly qualifies as "high"?
Understanding the Ratings
Most entry-level cameras are rated for 100,000 actuations. Professional bodies like the Nikon D6 or Canon 1DX III are rated for 400,000 to 500,000.
The 50% Rule
A camera with less than 50% of its rated life used is generally considered "low mileage". Between 50% and 100%, it is "well-used". Anything over 100% is "high mileage" and could fail at any time—though many cameras double their rated life before actually breaking.
Does it Matter for Mirrorless?
Electronic shutters have no moving parts and technically no "count" limit. However, the mechanical shutter in mirrorless cameras still wears out. Always check both counts if possible.
